WORDS AND THEIR MEANINGS IN
JOURNALISM
1. Lead: the summary of a news story
located in the first paragraph and it contain the 5W and 1H. (what, why, when,
where which and how).
2. Inverted
pyramid: the model used to describe how a news story is structured. It means
the heaviest goes at the top of the story and the lightest goes to the bottom.
3. Copy: The content of a news
story/article
4. By-line:
the name of a news story author usually found under the headline before the
story
5. Dateline:
the city in which a news story originated from, usually placed where the story
began
6. Source:
the initiator of a news story those for whom you gather your information from.
It can also be where news stories originated from, this can either be a person
or an agency.
7. Anonymous
source: A source who does not want to be
identified in a news story.
8. Spotter:
Somebody who helps the director/announcer to identify significant points in an
event.
9. Isolated
Camera: This is a camera used for instant replay action only not for general
pick up.

style : the way a media house performs their activities in serving the public
1. Monitor:
this is a television receiver used in the studio and control so that the
station can provide good service to it’s audience
2. Studio
monitor: this is a television receiver that is located in the studio that shows
the programme that is in progress before the programme is sent outside to
the public.

this I s amechanical display device that projects the copy (news stories) over the lance,
for a news caster to read without losing eye
contact with the viewer
1. Account executive: this is the person responsible for
the sale of air time in radio or
television station either for commercial purpose or otherwise
1. Amplitude: the capacity of a radio wave
1. Anchor/presenter:
this is the person who takes charge
