Three months passed nothing happened. six months passed ; there was no pregnancy! The year rolled by but atata and Elo still did not carry a bouncing baby boy in their hands!
they went back to ikolo to tell him of their great disappointment ikolo brought out his mirrow once more and peered into it clossely
''what! what am seeing?'' he exclaimed.
''i hope your wife has not been eating egg'' asked by ikolo
''eggs? which eggs! asked Atata, greatly surprised.
'' eggs of hens, of fish, or anything!'' ikolo replied
'' but you didn't tell use so, did you?'' aked atata in great surprise.
'' how can a woman who wants a child eat eggs?'' asked ikolo. ''is it not from eggs we get children? answer me! if a woman depreves other creatures from getting children by eating their eggs how can she expect to get pregnant and get children, eh? do i need to tell you all these things before you understand ? are you a stranger in this land ? are you not a son of the soil?''
atata was thus silence for not knowing the belliefs of his own land
''well, let's not querrel over it. it's never too late to try again'' entreated Elo
ikolo gave her more powerful medicin with new lists of do and don't, and Atata and elo again went away with hoped but nothing happend after another year of emptiness, Atata, in anger and disappointment carried away all the black pots of medicine prepare for them by ikolo and threw them into the river noger: that very month Elo became pregnant. Atata and Elo could not hardbly contain themselves for joy. During the next three months Elo's e talk of the village. to many people, it was a real miracle
But more miracles were to come after three months the pregnancy refused to develop and further. neither develop nor got smaller. after nine months the possition was still the same. Atata and Elo were greatly alarmed and disappointed at the strange turn of events
Uzi, Atata's friend, went to consult a very powerful native doctor in another town. on the instructions of the native doctor a pregnant she-goat was bought and kept in the yard. The native doctor predicted that elo would deliver her child as soon as the pregnant she-goat delivers hers. Three months later the she-goat brought forth her young one but elo experienced no birth pains of any kind.
the people's opinion soon changed. perharps, Elo was sick but not pregnant; at all many of them thought Atata's family urged him to marry another wife who would raise children for the family but Atata had no immediate plan to marry another wife
Then there was another surprise. Elos pregnancy suddenly began develop after space of two and a half years. when the pregnancy was exactly three years old, elo delivered a bouncing baby boy!
At once the baby began to cry, not like a baby, but like a three years old child! when the local mid-wife looked at baby's mouth and saw a perfect set of teeth she shouted and ran away in terror. how could a day old baby have a perfect setof teeth? that was too unusual. The village elders soon gathered. feaeign that such an unusual child would bring bad luck and disaster to the village, they dicided to take the child to the evil forest where it would die on its own
That descision of the village elders was like a death sentence to Elo and Atata. Elo broke into hot, bitter tear. Atata felt helpless and miserable. that very evening, the child was carried away to the evil forest, which was only half a mile from the village.
The following morning those who went to observe whether the wonderful child had died, saw no trace of it anywhere. and when Atata woke up from sleep that same morning, he saw no trace of Elo anywhere
